Load Shedding and Your Security System: 4 Layers That Need Backup Power

Every guide on this site mentions load-shedding backup somewhere, because every electronic security layer runs on mains power and stops the moment it's cut - unless something is backing it up. This guide pulls that scattered advice into one place: what actually needs backup power, roughly how long it needs to last, and what order to tackle it in if you can't back up everything at once.
The 4 layers, and what happens without backup
- Alarm panel and keypad. Most panels have a small internal battery, but it is sized for a short outage, not a multi-hour load-shedding stage. Check the panel's own backup runtime with your installer - many only cover 1-4 hours before the system goes silent.

Whole-property inverter vs backup per device
Two ways to approach this, and most South African homes end up somewhere between them:
- A small dedicated inverter or UPS for security only. Cheaper than a whole-house system, wired just to the alarm panel, NVR, router and gate motor. This is the realistic starting point for most budgets and is what "backup power" means in the other guides on this site.
- A whole-property inverter or solar-battery system. Covers security plus lights, fridge and Wi-Fi. Higher cost, but means you're not maintaining a separate small battery just for security - if you already have or are planning one for the house, route the security devices onto it rather than buying a second, dedicated unit.
Either way, ask your installer for a stated runtime in hours at your stage of load shedding, not just "it has backup" - a battery that lasts 90 minutes is not enough for a 2-4 hour outage.
If you can only back up one thing first
- The alarm panel. It is the layer everything else depends on triggering - a camera with no working alarm behind it just records the break-in rather than helping prevent it.
- The CCTV recorder and router. Second priority - footage and remote viewing during exactly the hours an outage makes a property look most vulnerable.
- The gate motor. Third, mostly for convenience and to avoid a manual override becoming a security gap of its own (a gate left open because the motor won't move).
- The electric fence energizer. Last if budget is genuinely limited, since a fence still provides some physical deterrent even briefly de-energised, unlike a silent alarm.
What to ask an installer, in writing
- What is the stated backup runtime for each device, in hours, not just "yes it has backup"?
- Does the backup cover the router too, or only the alarm/NVR - a security system with no internet can't send alerts or allow remote viewing.
- How many gate open/close cycles does the backup give during a load-shedding-length outage?
- Is the battery replaceable on its own, or does the whole unit need replacing when it degrades?
